Among the reviews was this upsetting image of Matthew as Gabriel.

Edit: 6point7 has been amazingly kind to fiddle with the quality of the scan. Thank you so much!

The Observer has two images of Matthew Macfadeyn from Secret Life.  The first shows Charlie (the character Matthew plays) with a small girl.  The second shows Matthew and the director, Rowan Joffe.

A grateful thanks to JaneV for the scans.

Both can be found in the galleries.

Images from Secret Life

6point7 found that tomorrows edition of The Times carries an excellent preview for Secret Life and an article about the drama. I will scan in any other images I find on the hard copy in the morning.

It is easy to see why some viewers might worry about Secret Life. Channel 4’s new drama portrays a convicted paedophile struggling not to reoffend after his release into the community. The central, unavoidable issue in the script by writer-director Rowan Joffe is that it presents the paedophile Charlie Webb (Matthew Macfadyen) as a sympathetic, and often extremely likeable character. This could easily seem like an attempt to arouse sympathy for the worst kind of sex offender and an example of Channel 4 at its trendy, liberal worst. To some, it might be more evidence of the channel’s lack of moral compass, an extension of its preoccupation with deviant sex into a wholly inappropriate area.

Yet such a reaction really would miss the point. Macfadyen’s character is portrayed as a “nice” man, says Joffe, because most paedophiles are not the shabby, gap-toothed kidnappers of parental nightmare. He quotes Detective Chief Inspector Bob Maclachlan, a former head of Scotland Yard’s paedophile unit, who says that many offenders seem to be intelligent and charming men. “Monsters don’t get your kids. Nice men do.”  read more on the website

Death At A Funeral: production images

Mrs Q, Karan, and Perfectly Matte all stumbled upon the updated official website and its new content. All new images added to the galleries but here is a copy of some of the production notes.

Production notes from the film:

At the center of the day's maelstrom is Daniel, the poor, put-upon son who just wants to give his father the send-off he deserves -- but instead finds himself unraveling the rampant improprieties in his family. To play Daniel, the filmmakers chose one of today's fastest rishing British stars, Matthew Macfadyen, who came to the fore and won global acclaim playing the ultimate romantic lead of Mr. Darcy in the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice. Having studied at the renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Macfadyen might be known for his more serious roles, but he proves he has the chops of the consummate straight man in the role of Daniel.

"For Daniel, I needed somebody who could play his character with honesty and, as a result, would set the bar for the rest of the cast's performance level, because he's the very core of the story," explains Oz. "If he had been too broad, everyone else would be too broad. But Matthew was extraordinarily subtle and that's what the film needed as a base. He's really amazing that way. I think he's on the edge of cracking up in nearly every scene, but he doesn't reveal it."

After being won over by the script, Macfadyen was further charmed by the idea of taking on a character who defies what audiences might expect from him. "Daniel is a great part and very different from anything I've done," he says. "The script was so funny and unpredictable. I'd never laughed so hard before. It was a hoot playing Daniel, and hopefully it'll be a real hoot for audiences to watch him go through this unbelievable day as well."

The actor notes that Daniel is rather stuck as the film opens -- unable to finish his novel, unable to move out of the house, unable to face his famous brother, and apparently unable even to pull off his own father's funeral without major mishaps. "He's someone who really needs to fly the nest and become a man," laughs Macfadyen. "But I think he kind of grows a spine throughout the film and by then end, as things get worse and worse, he finally starts to get a bit of steel in his back. Of course, when the stakes are highest, that's when hilarity comes."

Macfadyen might play his character with a nuanced, straight-faced realism, but he couldn't help but be bowled over by all the outrageous antics going on around Daniel, who himself starts to lose control. "Everyone in the cast was so brilliant," he comments. "They each have their own agenda, which are each very human and, therefore, very funny. I was so unable to stop giggling during so many of the scenes, it was quite appalling!"

The Pain And The Itch : more pics

The new October issue of Red magazine , in UK, has an interview and gorgeous full page photo of Matthew. It has been scanned, and the larger image with interview has been added to the galleries. It will be transcribed later for here.

The transcription is below:

Matthew Macfadyen

Vital Statistics: Matthew, 32, is married to actress Keeley Hawes, 30. They have two children, Maggie, two and Ralph, one, plus Keeley's son, Myles, seven, from her former marriage. They live in South London.

On Death at a Funeral: It's a farce really, about a family who are trying to give the patriarch a decent send-off and things go terribly wrong.  There's blackmail and secrets and hallucinogenic drugs...  British comedy's great, because there's a lot of repressed anger - it's all about hidden rage.  Like Basil Fawlty.

On playing a paedohile in Secret Life:  It wasn't the most glamorous job!  I thought about it a bit, when I read the script, because you never know how people will respond, but, in the main, I got a positive reaction.  It was a really happy shoot, oddly.  It's often like that, if you're doing something really dark - everyone has quite a good time, a lot of giggles.

On being a father:  It's changed my life for the better.  Kids are hilarious.  Nobody tells you how funny they're going to be; all you hear about is sleepless nights - and there is that - but they're also very funny.

On time off:  I'd like to take Keeley for a little holiday, just the two of us, and then I'd like to have the kids couriered to us after about a week.  Somewhere nice and warm, like France.

Best British actor:  Daniel Day-Lewis.  He's the living actor I most admire.

Favourite place in Britain: My bed.  As opposed to Lake Windemere or St Paul's Cathedral.

Favourite British Quirk:  The amount of different meanings behind the word 'sorry'.  AA Gill wrote a funny book called The Angry Island, which is all about rage - the defining characteristic of Englishness.  People think British people are polite, because they say sorry all the time, but it's more like, "Sorry, f*ck you.'

Things you miss most about home: My wife and kids.

Best thing about being British: As an actor, the nice thing is the language of all those great playwrights... if that doesn't sound too wanky.

Where you'll see Matthew nextDeath at a Funeral is released on Nov 2.

Middletown DVD Image and new trailer for US release

A huge thank you to 6point7 who has scanned in a picture of the new Grazia article discussing Keeley Hawes and Matthew Macfadyens mulleted part in episode 7 of Ashes to Ashes.

This is Nottingham has included some of the quotes from the Grazia article.

Ashes To Ashes star Keeley Hawes has apparently revealed her husband Matthew Macfadyen couldn't resist a role in the show after watching just one episode.

The 31-year-old actress, who plays DI Alex Drake in the 80s spin-off from Life On Mars, also said her three children spent a lot of time on set with her whilst she was filming the BBC One show, according to Grazia.

Keeley said: "Matthew watched episode one and just said 'I'd love to be in this!' He plays a Brummie guy with a mullet - such a good look. And he has OCD. His character sits in a bath of baked beans for a year to raise money for children in Botswana. Then someone steals the money."

Speaking about her three children - Myles, eight, Maggie, three, and Ralph, one - she said: "They came on set quite a lot. It was like an Ashes To Ashes creche."

Thanks to JaneV the first screencap of Matthew Macfadyen appearing in the trailer for Episode 7 of Ashes to Ashes has appeared.  The rest can be found in the galleries or the forum.

It's apparent Matthew is multi-talented as both a comedian and a dramatic actor.  It's hard to believe that this time next week we'll find out if Matthew has won Best Male Actor for his part in Secret Life for the RTS Awards and then watch him on Ashes to Ashes.

Thank you JaneV

Image of Matthew Macfadyen on the Red Carpet: Bafta 2008

Maryp went to the Bafta-TV awards on 20 April, 2008 with the hopes of meeting Matthew Macfadyen. She was lucky to do so and has related to us her experience in the forum.

The following is a small excerpt from her exciting experience

He signed my photo and I said something like 'Matthew, I've got a message for you from Darcylicious' and he chuckled - it was a lovely sound and he had a wide smile on his face. I asked if I could hold his hand and he said 'of course' - so I did - but I can't remember if I held it with one of my own or both!!

I said 'we have a special delivery on it's way to you with all our love and congratulations. You are always a winner to us and we wish you the very best of luck!' He said 'that is so sweet, thank you very much, that is lovely'.

This lovely picture taken by Soule of the AA forum and shared by Milton, captures the moment that Maryp was holding Matthew's hand, and hinting about our gift to him.

Thank you Maryp for sharing this moment with us, and expressing all of our thoughts and good wishes for Matthew.
